Unlimited Data Transfer for iPad Unclear
I have an Unlimited Domestic Data Account for my iPad. One thing that I haven’t found in all of the hoopla about the iPad 2 is how to transfer my account from the old device to the new one. The best idea seemed to go right to the source and ask how it’s done. A nice woman at AT&T Customer Service said, “That’s a good question.” In my experience, it’s never a good thing when the person you’re calling for help says “that’s a good question.” It means they don’t know and you just put them on the spot. Right now, AT&T Customer Service hasn’t been told that they will support account transfers from the original iPad to the iPad 2. If you get a new iPad 2 and activate it on your own, you...
Mac App Store: First Impressions
Apple delivered its Mac App Store this morning with an OS update (restart required). Once the installation was complete, a new menu item appeared under the Apple menu; just click the thumbnail for a larger view. As expected, it works in the same manner as iTunes and provides a familiar interface. You must have an Apple ID to purchase software from the Mac App Store. If you have an existing account with iTunes, the same one will work here. I found some of my existing apps in the store and they were already marked as installed, including Aperture 3, iLife and iWork apps, etc. However, I also have the TextWrangler app installed and it wasn’t recognized by the new App Store. Interestingly, Aperture 3 is listed in the store for only $79.99, down from its $199...
The Paper.li Problem
I received a notice on Twitter Sunday morning that surprised me. Someone I didn’t know was announcing his online newspaper, including content from one of my blogs. That got my attention, because I’ve never even discussed the possibility of sharing my content with anyone else. After reluctantly checking the link in his Twitter post, I discovered that I’d been sucked into the world of aggregate publishing. Everything on the web page, configured to look like a newspaper, was from different sources relating to the same subject (in this case, Florida travel). There were also a lot of prominent ads. It was instant monetization without the hassle of creating any content to drive advertisements. My post wasn’t a major factor in the conglomeration....
LinkedIn Creeps Me Out
By now, it’s not news that hackers compromised user accounts of Gawker.com websites. Gawker sent out notices to users to change their passwords, particularly if they used the same password on more than one web site. It’s embarassing for them, but I respect that they announced the problem to their user base and gave recommendations to keep us from getting spoofed. What I don’t like is the message I received from LinkedIn about the problem at Gawker. As you can see, they’re trying to protect me from being compromised because I used the same e-mail address on Linked In as I used on the Gawker site. Now that is really creepy. How the hell does LinkedIn know what e-mail address I use on any other site? The answer would seem to be that they...
